Frederiksborg Amtsavis, Saturday July 30 2005 Memorable concert with Gregg Stafford on CD The concert 9th of November last year in Støberihallen, with New Orleans Delight and the soloists Gregg Stafford and Brian Towers, is now being released on CD. Hillerød's jazz audience were on their toes last year the 9th of November, when the Danish band New Orleans Delight with the American trumpeter and singer Gregg Stafford and the Canadian trombonist Brian Towers as soloists gave a tremendous concert in Støberihallen. The evening belonged to Gregg Stafford as the talented musician from New Orleans has become a known and loved guest in Hillerød since his first visit in 1989 - and through the years many of Hillerød's jazz lovers have visited Gregg in New Orleans. Despite the long relation there has never been arranged a concert with Gregg Stafford in Hillerød. For this reason the Hillerød audience owe great thanks to the leader of New Orleans Delight, clarinetist Kjeld Brandt, for arranging the concert in Gregg Stafford's Danish "hometown", Hillerød. During the concert Gregg Stafford - the main character on stage this evening - used the opportunity to, in a subtle and highly musical way, thank his friends in Hillerød, whom he by the way is visiting again these days. The local aspect shows through in several of the CDs 12 tunes, among others in "Old Time Religion", where Gregg mentions names of his friends in Hillerød. Best Concert Jørgen Vad was responsible for recording this concert, the last big concert while Olaf Nyeng was in charge of Støberihallen. By the way, afterwards Olaf Nyeng said it was the best concert he had witnessed in the 12 years he managed Hillerød's cultural center. In a strange and clever way Jørgen Vad has succeded in cleaning the recording, eliminating the many disturbing sounds from a live concert without removing the live feeling. The internet jazz magazine Jazzreview.com also has listened to the CD, which is called »New Orleans Delight, featuring Gregg Stafford & Brian Towers«, and here the CD is getting »five shining Stars«. Jazzreview.com compares Gregg Stafford with Louis Armstrong and characterizes his singing, for instance on »What a Wonderful World« as an "echo of Armstrong's spirit, if not his gravel voice" and estimates the concert to be Stafford's best, since he got famous. Jazzreview also praises the musicians in New Orleans Delight and denotes it as clearly the band's finest CD, ending the review with - as mentioned - 5 stars. Music Mecca has published the CD, and it can be purchased from this company on telephone +45 3311-1015. Besides, the CD can be purchased every Saturday at the lunch jazz in John. F Kennedy pub in Hillerød, where sales already are booming. mavi Read review from Hillerød or from the tour in Sweden |
