Over the years The New Orleans Delight have built an enviable reputation of presenting first class performances throughout Denmark, Sweden, the UK and further afield. The band members all have a love and knowledge of the dance hall sound epitomised by the work of the bands that first came to our attention from the American Music recordings of George Lewis, Kid Thomas, the wonderful work of the Humphrey Brothers and so many more. The New Orleans Delight musicians know this music and continue to work hard at achieving that elusive New Orleans approach and style. Never just resting on their reputation the band continues to develop and introduce different tunes, rhythms and some of the more contemporary street beat influences that can be heard to this day in the Crescent City. The band plays with a two piece front line and to make this work they all need to have a good knowledge of melodies and again this is achieved. They also have policy which they like to adopt and that is to invite guests to play with their band. There is list of trumpet players, reed players, singers and others who have appeared with the band. Judging by the many favourable CD reviews their have received and their enthusiastic bunch of followers they seem to please audiences. Jazz promoters, Jazz Club organisers and Festival committees seem to like the band too. This recording is a good example of The New Orleans Delight, on tour, with guests. The play list on this CD illustrates the range of the band's repertoire and the diverse approaches the band is able to produce all within the New Orleans tradition. There is a real old dance hall sound on Move The Body Over and then close harmony playing on Beautiful Ohio. The rhythm section takes in its stride the diverse rhythms of Jamaica and Begonia and conversely lays down a smooth approach on the Same Old Love. The introduction on Every Woman's Blues is pure blues piano. One of the pleasures of being asked to play this tour and of writing these notes is that it will be up to you to decide what my contribution is on this CD. However, I am in a good position to tell you that the guest from the USA, Sarah Spencer is the gal that sets these sessions alight. Booting ensemble sax that added to the melodies with exciting riffs stimulating the lead and then, not with pyrotechnics, melody based solos in the real old New Orleans tradition. Then there are the vocals. It is so rare these days to find singers that have listened to those Vaudeville Blues performers that make up so much of the history and development of jazz. Here we have a young lady, originally from London, UK, living in the USA and bringing us songs and routines influenced by Sarah's knowledge of the recordings of Ma Rainey, Clara Smith, Ida Cox and many others. Well, if you are reading this it will probably mean that you have bought the CD. I must tell you it was a fun tour and I think the essence has been captured on this recording. All involved in this production hope you enjoy listening to an evening with The New Orleans Delight and Sarah Spencer. Derek Winters Cornwall, June 2009 |
